The Small Octopus - bus stop in Brno

New built bus shelter of station Loosova situated in area of housing estate Lesná. Its draft came of public competition organized by producer of nonalcoholic drinks. Author of the draft Martin Felgr found inspiration in controversial project of National Library designed by architect Jan Kaplický. The new face of bus stop was designed by Eva Jiřičná and AI-DESIGN by the approval of Eliška Kaplicky.

The small octopus comes into existence on the place of former bus shelter.  It is constituted by fiberglass shell formed into organic shape and fixed to glass-cement plinth, which serves at the same time as a bench for waiting passengers.

The shell consists of a glass fibre, which is laid in resin approximately in 8 to 10 coatings. Thickness of the shell is subject of static calculation – on the top is the thickness just 3 mm, in most strained places – on the external edge including bordering of entrance portal is the thickness on the contrary approx. 13 mm.

The shell is in seven points fastened to steel construction made of IPE profiles by special anchors made to measure.  The shell ´s external surface is painted with varnish polyester coating so-called Gelcoat.  The surface has uniform color and anti-graffiti finish.

To make the internal part more spacious, the shell is fixed to the plinth made of prefabricated glass-cement components that serve as the bench. Each component is atypical and made to measure. The complex is completed by outdoor carpet glued to concrete floor slabs. Lightening holes including the main so-called "eye" situated above the entrance have an elliptical shape; the Perspex is formed into a 3D shape and glued to the shell.
