Chronology

2002

The pole with a lookout is located in a flat landscape approximately 300 mm away from the town Hrubý Jeseník. Within this context, the lookout is also a local landmark. The tower is anchored in the landscape forming a hill surrounded by trees, defining the place in the landscape and organising the function of the structure. The hill is a bold part of the landscape, triangular in its shape and completely turfed. Three massive slabs of the pedestal consisting of metal baskets filled with quarry stone grow up from the hill fixing the tower to the ground. The pedestal’s shape – three independent fragments of walls – emphasises the triangular shape of the tower. The material and scale of the plinth define it as another natural element growing up from the landscape. The operators´ technology is concealed under the ground in separate rooms. The public may reach the hill ascending a staircase built of quarry stone. As the technology is vertically separated from the public circulation areas, the tower may be operated without any fencing.
